A handful of Texas House candidates beefed up war chests with six-figure sums last year in campaigns for seats that Democrats are targeting in open contests in 2020. Only one of them represents the GOP.

Mansfield Republican David Cook raised more campaign cash from contributors in 2019 than any of the other contenders in open fights for seats that Democrats have in their sights in a quest to reclaim the majority in the Capitol's west wing at the polls this fall.

Cook - the mayor for the past dozen years in the Fort Worth suburb where he's based - rounded up more than $145,000 from donors in a span of only three weeks after launching an eleventh-hour bid in House District 96 on the final day for filing in December.

Cisco Republican Jon Francis seized the fundraising lead in races for House seats that incumbents are giving up with more than $610,000 in contributions in a mere two weeks after entering an open contest seven days after the incumbent dropped out on the day after the filing deadline last month.

But almost 85 percent of Francis' support came from his spouse's parents to his belated bid for the House District 60 seat in 2020. GOP megadonor Farris Wilks and his wife gave Francis $250,000 apiece for a campaign in a district where he received almost $16,000 more from other Wilks family members.

GOP rival Glenn Rogers of Graford reported contributions of more than $104,000 in the second half of 2019 after diving into the HD 60 race when Republican State Rep. Mike Lang of Granbury had been wavering on whether to run for re-election this year.

Euless Democrat Jeff Whitfield corralled almost $120,000 from donors in the past six months in a bid for the House District 92 seat that GOP State Rep. Jonathan Stickland of Bedford is relinquishing with a campaign for a new term in 2020.

Whitfield is attempting to have Democratic voters replace him as HD 92 nominee in a primary tussle in a suburban district where the minority party's 2018 standard-bearer Steve Riddell of Bedford will be on the ballot again on March 3. Whitfield headed into January with almost $121,000 in cash on hand while Riddell had six times less in reserve after raising $52,000 last year.

Sugar Land Democrats Rish Oberoi and Suleman Lulani reported contributions of $81,000 and $41,000 respectively in 2019 for a first-round fight in an open House District 26 race in a primary field that includes Lawrence Allen and Laquitta DeMerchant. But Lulani fortified his bid for the lower chamber with a $90,000 loan and had more than $91,000 socked away on the first day of January compared to $55,000 for Oberoi.

Cook hit the ground running as filing on the day of the December deadline for the HD 96 race in a move that appeared to prompt veteran GOP State Rep. Bill Zedler of Arlington to pull the plug on a re-election race the following day. The local elected leader has nearly $319,000 in the campaign bank at the end of December.

Cook has the luxury of saving his funds for a general election showdown with Democrat Joe Drago - a Crowley attorney who raised $38,000 last year and entered 2010 with a cash balance of $18,000.
