Seventeen Texas House Republicans on the enemy party hit list rounded up almost $3.2 million collectively last year for re-election races on a battlefield where a dozen freshmen Democrats raised more than $1.4 million in bids for new terms as GOP targets in 2020.

With the Democrats just eight or nine seats shy of a west wing majority for the first time in almost two decades, the minority party rookies who picked up House seats in 2018 on a blue wave ride generated almost $118,000 on average from contributors in their first year on the job as lawmakers.

The GOP representatives who the Democrats are targeting raked in more than $188,000 on average from donors in 2019 - 59 percent more than the blue wave rookies corralled from contributors in a development that's in line with fundraising trends for the lower chamber under Republican rule in the Lone Star State.

But it looks like the targeted Republicans will need substantially more than their Democratic counterparts with President Donald Trump leading the ticket as a historically-polarizing incumbent who's had a nightmarish effect on down-ballot candidates for the GOP here in the last two election cycles.

State Rep. Morgan Meyer - a Dallas Republican who appears to be the most vulnerable state legislator in Texas this fall - scored more campaign cash from supporters in 2019 than any other representative on either side of the aisle with donations of almost $476,000.

A trio of GOP colleagues in significant danger to various degrees - State Reps. Jeff Leach of Allen, Angie Chen Button of Garland and Craig Goldman of Fort Worth - all eclipsed the $300,000 mark last year in the dash for cash in the face of potential elimination at the polls in November. Leach reported contributions of $406,000 for the past 12 months while Button and Goldman raised $306,000 and $302,000 respectively.

Republican State Rep. Matt Shaheen of Plano amassed the third largest war chest last year for a re-election campaign in a district that Democrats have one of their best shots to flip in 2020. But Shaheen relied on a mix of money from others and himself with contributions of $145,000 after loaning his campaign $187,000.

Targeted GOP State Reps. Matt Krause of Fort Worth, Lynn Stucky of Sanger and Steve Allison of San Antonio all raised slightly more than $200,000 from supporters in 2019.

A pair of Dallas Democrats - rookie State Reps. John Turner and Julie Johnson - reported donations of $286,000 and $238,000 respectively last year as the most successful fundraisers on the list of 2018 blue wave victors who the Republicans have in their sights in 2020.

Freshmen Democratic State Reps. Vikki Goodwin of Austin, Erin Zwiener of Driftwood, John Bucy of Austin and James Talarico of Round Rock all reaped more than $100,000 apiece. Republican State Reps. Todd Hunter of Corpus Christi, Jim Murphy of Houston and Sarah Davis of Houston raised more than $100,000 each as well in 2019.
